Enjoying the down time...

We've really enjoyed the extra family time this week having Chris home more than usual. We still can't get enough of these cute boys. Here, Niko is making sure he can sit on everyone's lap, even Sam's. Sam was pretty patient with the ordeal. This is Niko doing his work at the desk in the office
while Maman does her work, too.
And of course, Sam helped me
go through the mail. :)

I ADORE watching these two interact. This is both boys playing with the little toy piano we've had for a while. Niko likes pushing the buttons and Sam just happened to help play by leaning on certain notes. :)

We finally captured on video Sam's "eating" Maman. We love how he'll chase us with all he's worth, mouth first. It's so cute! Those teeth are getting dangerous, though. :) I'm not the most photogenic in this one, but he is, so I wanted to share it.

After Niko had finished all the drawing he wanted to do, we started playing with a little "camion" (truck) . He thought it was the FUNNIEST thing when the truck would go too fast to be caught. I can't get enough of the laughter!

Christmas Day

White Christmas!
(This is the view from our front door.)
Santa came!

Merry Christmas, Sunny!
We had a lovely breakfast with Amber, Dustin, & Corban
consisting of sausage, egg, and cheese croissants and...

Grandmother Lyon's french chocolate! Thank you, Uncle Michael!
Christmas Babes

Aria gave Niko a wooden truck that she had painted herself.
In Niko's stocking, he got a road course from Auntie Ang.
What a great match!
Niko taking a break after presents
We were able to drive up to the ranch and see Grandma and Grandpa Clawson (Mami and Pepe Guy) and the Huefner clan. So nice to see everyone!
Back at Gigi's house, Niko and Ollie ate some chips to tide them over until dinner. :)
Ollie and Niko also ran a lot of laps around Gigi's main floor.
Christmas Dinner included a mix of relatives: (from left around the table) Stina and Taylor Cline (Lyon clan), Uncle Davy Lyon and Uncle Michael Lyon holding Corban Fife (we're mindful of Uncle Phil serving overseas and hope he had a nice Christmas), Angi, Ollie, Baz, and Marc Pelissie, Sam with Uncle Bean/Eric Pelissie, Gigi/Pat Pelissie, Chris, Genn, Niko Pelissie, Dustin Fife (Amber Fife taking picture). Thank you, everyone!

Thank you, everyone for making the day a happy one and being flexible and supportive!

Christmas Videos

These are not in order, sorry!

Sam was very cute with his present from Mami and Pepe Guy. At the end of this one, Niko has the funniest laugh!

This is Niko discovering one of his puzzles.

Niko opens his gift from Brandon & Ashton on Christmas Eve.

3 Babes made Christmas morning so enjoyable!

This clip is a little longer, but it shows us opening stockings and getting into the presents. :)

Aria gave Niko a wooden truck that she had painted and it goes perfectly with a road course from Ang that Niko got in his stocking. :)

Lately, Niko has been playing more and more with Sunny.

It was really great to see the Huefners and Clawson Grandparents. Niko was so cute saying good-bye to the girls that we made him do it again for the camera. :)

Christmas Sunday

We had some great talks in church today about the true gifts of Christmas. I love being reminded of the real meaning of Christmas. My favorite quote from a couple of the talks was "There wouldn't be a Christmas without Easter." Without the Atonement and the Great Sacrifice of our Savior, He would have been "just another baby born in Bethlehem." I need to qualify my endorsement of the preceding quotes: I actually think that He was ordained to His mortal mission from His birth, but the important principle is that it's what Christ did for each of God's children that makes us celebrate His birth. I am so grateful for my Savior and for His guidance in my life. I pray that I may prove myself worthy of being His disciple.

We also were able to attend most of Pat Pelissie's sacrament meeting today. She sang "Ave Maria" so beautifully. Yes, it may not have been the most reverent thing to do, but I video recorded her performance for posterity (see below).

And, finally, just as we got home from GiGi's (Pat's), Chris pulled up, having finished his church responsibilities. He played with Niko for a few minutes in the truck. What fun those two have together!

Huefners at the Clawson's

I didn't get a picture of everyone, but here are a couple from our visit to our Grandparents' house today (Emmy and George holding Corban and Sam respectively, Emmy with Grandma). The Huefner Family is in town visiting for Christmas. It was nice that Amber and I were able to spend the afternoon with three adoring cousins passing around the babies and playing with Niko. It's always good to see Aunt George (JuliAnn) and Uncle Steve. Grandma opened her present that was facilitated by mom, Amber, and I, which was a handmade miniature book that is a pin for her to wear. Amber gathered photos of all the families and grandchildren, shrunk them down, and attached them to the pages in the book. (We gave her an album with the pictures a normal size as well.) She really liked it.
It was also my first 29th birthday today, so we all had a piece of Turtle Pie in celebration. You can tell that Niko really enjoyed helping Grandma (Mami) with hers. :)

Bad Mommy!

I know, I know... I'm such a sweet tooth! I made fudge today to take to the bishopbric social and Niko noticed. He understood that the pan was "c'est CHAUD!" and then understood that it was "chocolat!" I couldn't deprive him completely when he actually verbalized the correct word, could I? He definitely learned it, that's for sure!

Visit from Guy and Micah

Our friend, Guy, from Madagascar and his son, Micah, came by to visit today. It's been a while since they visited. Guy is in the army and will be deployed in February 2008 for a year to Kuwait. We will miss him and hope that Micah will manage to keep in touch with his daddy. Micah is already so big, I can only imagine how much he will change while Guy is away.

Santa Clause

I've thought about how to approach the Santa Clause issue with our kids. I've been a bit torn about endorsing the notion of a big fat guy bringing a child presents and a black and white world of either "naughty and nice." But fighting that rational, grounded side of me is the fantastical, idealist part of me that wants our kids to believe in a spirit of giving and a world where no child is forgotten. There is great power in the magic of Christmas. I guess the "believer" in me won out this year, especially when we heard Glenn talk about creating the magic of Christmas for little children. I want to do some more research on the origins of Old Saint Nick, but in the mean time, we're endorsing Santa. The boys got to meet him at our ward Christmas party last night. Niko has even been saying "Santa?" He's starting to get it. :)

A story Marc Pelissie forwarded me this year helped me see another way I'd like to approach the subject. It's called "Adventure With Grandma":
I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her on the day my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!"
My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her world-famous cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so. It had to be true.
Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus!" she snorted. "Ridiculous! Don't believe it. That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad. Now, put on your coat, and let's go."
"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous, cinnamon bun. "Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything.
As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.
I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping. For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten- dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for.
I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, and the people who went to my church. I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock 's grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out for recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note, telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough, and he didn't have a coat. I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat!
I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. "Is this a Christmas present for someone?" The lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.
"Yes," I replied shyly. "It's.... for Bobby." The nice lady smiled at me. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag and wished me a Merry Christmas.
That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat in Christmas paper and ribbons (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it --
Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially one of Santa's helpers.
Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."
I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his doorbell and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma. Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.
Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent
Shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous.
Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.
I still have the Bible, with the tag tucked inside: $19.95.
He who has no Christmas in his heart will never find Christmas under a tree.

Boys' Bath Time

Sometimes my heart literally melts all over these two boys. They are so precious. I love watching them have fun in the tub. So darling!

Just Cute Boys

My usual habit in the morning, on days when Chris can't help me, is to bring Sam into Niko's room and change his diaper in Niko's crib. Niko and I have the following conversation:
Niko: "Hi, Maman!"
Me: "Bonjour, Niko! Est-ce que tu as bien dormi?"
Niko: "Umm... asjdkyhlsjhfkjsbdjasdjhfaksljflajshkjfhd, ok?"
Me: "Oh! Wow. OK. Je doit changer la couche de bebe."
Niko: "Bebe, PEE PEE, CAH CAH!"
Me: "Oui, le bebeb a fait peepee!"
When I finish with Sam, I ask Niko: "Je doit aussi changer la couche de Niko. Est-ce que tu peux t'allonger a cote de bebe?" (Can you lie down next to the baby?) Niko either lays down next to Sam or I lay him down next to Sam. This lasts for all of 3 seconds before Sam kicks his legs and rolls over, away from Niko. Niko then says, "Bebe oooooool!" (He's trying to say "roule" or "rolls over".) It's really neat to see them interact, even when Sam is pulling Niko's hair. I love being a mom!

Michael Visits

Michael drops by every now and then to say "hi" and play with his nephews. When he came by today, we talked about his finals and how he's excited to be going home to NY for Christmas. We wish him luck on his trip and look forward to his return after the New Year!

Aquarium

Angi, Ollie, Baz, Niko, Sam, and I piled in Angi's minivan and went to the Aquarium today (not far from Chris' office). The best parts were the hands on exhibits where Ollie and Niko could put their hands in the water, touch the sting rays, sea cucumber, and several other miscellaneous sea creatures. There was a large octopus, many tanks of fish, some frogs, and even sharks. Can’t wait to go back.

Glenn Beck Christmas Show

Marc, Angi, Chris, and I went on an official double date to the Glenn Beck Christmas Show last night. It was a great show. This tour is the last time that Glenn will be doing this particular show, but we got a peak at next year’s show and we can’t wait to go see it. It will focus on one of the most touching stories from Glenn’s childhood, the Christmas Sweater. It promises to be very powerful and focus on the Atonement of Christ. Can’t wait.

After the show, we decided to prolong the independence and get dinner at the Cheesecake Factory. Hum, hum, HUM! Delicious!
